‘Let us continue to champion the cause of equality, justice, and inclusivity’ – Entrepreneur Evie Kanhai-Gurchuran

Bringing a message of inclusion and equity, Gender Advocate and Entrepreneur Evie Kanhai-Gurchuran calls for a broadened national conversation that champions respect and acceptance. Gurchuran was at the time addressing members of the Rotary Club of Georgetown at the organisation’s launch of its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Project on Wednesday, January 10, at Palm Court in Main Street. Gurchuran, the guest speaker as part of the Guyana Together campaign’s presentation at the forum, called for respect and better treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) people, “it is fundamental for the well-being of our families, the success of our businesses, and the development of stronger, more united communities,” Gurchuran said.

Gurchuran listed what she described as discriminatory practices and biases which she said that “long hindered” the full participation of every Guyanese in the job market. “It is time for a paradigm shift,” she declared, “a commitment to maximizing our country’s labour force and affirming that every citizen deserves an equal opportunity to work hard and provide for their families,” Gurchuran said.

The entrepreneur who is part of a growing community of employers advocating against discriminatory laws added that she understands that a thriving business is one where all team members have the support they need to succeed. “Globally, successful businesses and competitive economies are embracing inclusion not only as a moral imperative but as a strategic advantage,” Gurchuran added, “modernizing Guyana’s laws to eliminate discrimination is not just the right thing to do; it is an investment in the long-term sustainability and growth of our economy.”

Gurchuran, a mother, said she remains committed to instilling values of love, inclusion and equity in her family, “to treat others the way they would want to be treated.” “This principle applies universally, transcending differences and fostering empathy and understanding,” Gurchuran insists.

The Guyana Together campaign was launched in September 2023 and had close to 100 endorsements from organisations and businesses. Wednesday’s presentations saw a call for individual pledges from Rotarians from Joel Simpson, Managing Director of SASOD Guyana. Organisational endorsements and individual pledges can be made on the campaign’s website.

Guyana Together is a grassroot effort to increase acceptance levels among Guyanese and reduce the level of stigma and prejudice for LGBTQ Guyanese.
